“Stay committed to your decisions but stay flexible in your approach.”
-Tony Robbins
We all must start somewhere and, when learning new things or practicing new behaviors, mistakes are a part of the process. When striving to achieve a New Year’s resolution of any kind, it is essential to remember that you are in the process of changing behaviors, and falling short of your vision is a normal part of learning, growing, and developing new things.
I have always been a goal setter and used to go as far as investing a tremendous amount of time dictating every step of my desired journey. In January of 2021, I adopted a new philosophy and way of thinking about goal setting that has drastically changed the way I move forward toward my desired path in life. I continue to establish goals, as it is now just part of who I am as a person, but I no longer waste time preplanning all the steps along the way. I set my goal, determined the first few actions needed to get started, and let “life” dictate my path!
This new attitude and mindset around personal growth have changed me! I am more apt to start acting on new objectives immediately, experience less stress and anxiety about doing things “right,” and enjoy the journey far more than ever before.
Another thing I’ve learned through this new mindset is I have become more open to opportunities that present themselves along the way! Opportunities that I would not have thought of myself or would be closed off to in my old method of overly preplanned steps and the need to control my outcomes.
As you plan for this new year and begin working toward goals you want to achieve, I have a few thoughts that may help you experience more success through a more organic and less forceful approach.
TIP #1:
Define your target, shoot your arrow, start taking action in the direction of your goal, and determine the rest along the way.
Spend the most time deciding on your end goal. Envision how life will improve when you meet your desired destination and become excited about the rewards of accomplishing this goal. Once you have a clear vision of where you want to be, choose one small thing you can do immediately and successfully without fail in the direction of your end goal. Focus on the one step in front of you and not the length of your journey. Once you are proficient at that step, think about how you can realistically and reasonably challenge yourself through a slightly more significant action.
The best way to gain traction is to start small and go slow, remaining focused on each step rather than obsessed with the length of your journey. Keep your attention on each small action at a time, and when you look back at the end of 2022, you will have made tremendous progress toward your targeted goal.
TIP #2:
Done is better than perfect
Is there any perfectionist out there? Unfortunately, being a perfectionist can hold you back. My desire for perfection has prevented me from starting many lifelong dreams. As I weigh the pros and cons of my desired goals, I would overestimate my shortcomings and underestimate my strengths, preventing me from beginning to act if I couldn’t do something “perfectly.”
Thank goodness I have grown in wisdom and now understand that perfect doesn’t exist. If I do the best job I can, taking action and learning is more beneficial than being perfect, and this mindset has enabled me to achieve more over time.
TIP#3:
There is no right or wrong way
There are many ways to reach the same goal, and no one way is the only or best way to get there. What works for one person may not work for another, and the only best way to achieve your goals is by doing what’s best for you.
Whenever we force “our way” as the “right way” on someone else, we view it from a personal perspective unique to us. When we share our perceived best practices with someone in need of some help, we do not consider this person’s unique life situation, social-economic position, or individual preferences. We likely share our success with others with the best intentions, falsely assuming this same method will work for them.
Not true!!!
There is nothing wrong with sharing your success or providing advice to a friend in need, but everyone needs to try new things, decide if what worked for them will work for them, and determine the best path toward improvement.
